Environmental Issues

Superior Raceways™ are very friendly to our environment, the quality of which has to be protected if we are to continue as aquaculturists, and as a society. One of the main reasons that our raceways are superior is their flexibility---not only bending and not breaking, but flexible to the needs of the user and his environment.

Floating, in-ground, flow-through, recirc., or hybrid, Superior Raceways™ allow the user individual flexibility to meet the needs of his bottom line and his environment.

In floating, flow-through applications, a top water exit allows the vast majority of solids to settle to the bottom of the trough and concentrate near the exit, where they can be air-lifted out, concentrated in a settling basin, and used for farm fertilizer. In some cases, the water from the settling basin can be discharged to a created wetland. The use of filter feeders, e.g. tilapia, can also be employed to reduce suspended solids. Polcropping ans the use of aquaponics can be used to further utilize nutrients and optimize profits.

In some applications, the trough can be periodically cleaned with manual or automatic pool cleaning equipment, the effluent pumped to a settling basin and then a created wetland.

When floating raceways are combined with responsible feed management practices and environmentally sound husbandry practices, the receiving pond’s flora and fauna are normally very capable of recycling the dissolved nutrients, e.g. phosphorous and nitrogen, thus maintaining a balanced and healthy pond ecosystem.
